Dandruff Causes, Symptoms, Prevention and Natural home remedies to get rid of Dandruff
- By: Dr.Mike BoucherDandruff is a common scalp condition marked by white flakes on the scalp and itching.
It appears to be caused by a yeast-like fungus called malassezia, also known as pityrosporum. Malassezia is normally found on the scalp without causing problems, however, if it grows unchecked (possibly due to hormone imbalances, stress, immune suppression, infrequent shampooing, illness, or increased oil production), there is mild inflammation that produces dead skin cells. The dead cells mix with oil and clump together, making them appear white and flaky.
Dandruff Causes
The main causes of dandruff are impairment of general health, development of a toxic condition mainly due to eating of wrong foods, constipation, and a low vitality due to infectious diseases.
Other factors contributing to this disorder are emotional tension, harsh shampoos, exposure to cold, and general exhaustion.
Symptoms of Dandruff
As you can guess, dandruff symptoms are pretty easy for most people to spot. After all, that is why people do not like dandruff. Dandruff does not cause you much harm, but it does embarrass most people since in essence it is some oily looking flakes that come from the top of your head. They show up on dark colored clothing the best.
Natural home remedies to get rid of dandruff.
For good hair without dandruff, drink at least 2 liters of water. Combs must be washed and hair should be brushed regularly. Dandruff is a scalp condition that can be controlled by these following home remedies:
1. The use of fenugreek (methi) seeds is one such remedy. Two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds should be soaked overnight in water. The softened seeds should be ground into a fine paste in the morning. This paste should be applied all over the scalp and left for half an hour. The hair should then be washed thoroughly with soap nut solution or shikakai.
2. The use of a teaspoon of fresh lime juice for the last rinse, while washing the hair, is another useful remedy. This not only leaves the hair glowing but also removes stickiness and prevents dandruff.
3. Another way to counter dandruff is the use of green gram powder. The hair should be washed twice a week with two tablespoons of this powder mixed with half a cup of curd.
4. Beets have been found useful in reducing dandruff. Both tops and roots should be boiled in water and this water should be massaged into the scalp with the finger tips every night. White beets are better for this purpose.
5. The juice of snake gourd has been found beneficial in the prevention and treatment of dandruff. The juice should be rubbed over the scalp for this purpose.
6. Dandruff can be removed by massaging the hair for half an hour with curd which has been kept in the open for three days, or with a few drops of lime juice mixed with amla juice every night, before going to bed.
7. Grind raw onions to fine paste. Rub this paste into your scalp. Leave it on for half an hour. Wash thoroughly. Rub in some lemon juice into your scalp and hair to rid yourself of the onion smell. This will help to get rid of dandruff.
Dandruff prevention tips
1. The foremost consideration in the treatment of this disorder is to keep the hair and scalp clean so as to minimize the accumulation of dead cells. The hair should be brushed daily to improve the circulation and remove any flakiness.
2. Exposure of the head to the rays of the sun is also useful in the treatment of dandruff.
3. The scalp should be thoroughly massaged everyday, using one's finger tips and working systematically over the head.
Diet Tips for Dandruff
1. Avoid citrus fruits, bananas, dried, stewed, tinned fruits
2. The patient can gradually adopt a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on raw foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Further short periods of an all-fruit diet (except for those mentioned in # 1) for three days or so may be necessary at monthly intervals till the skin's condition improves.
3. Meats, sugar, white flour, strong tea or coffee, condiments, pickles, refined and processed foods should all be avoided.
